Huyton / Roby Extra Tracks

A few weeks ago my attention was drawn to the minutes from last July of the Rail Services Committee of the Merseyside Transport Authority.  Amongst other things the committee discussed a report by the Director of Integrated Transport entitled "Roby and Huyton Stations Upgrade".

This report makes the statement that expansion of the line through Roby and Huyton to three tracks is part of the electrification project currently under way.  The Northern Hub proposals (Which had not been approved at the time of this meeting.)  would then require further expansion to four tracks.

The three track proposal is new one to me, and I must say it seems a bit daft to re-model Huyton Junction twice.

Here's a diagram which originates from Network Rail.

  1. The are four platforms why do the lines have to cross each other? Why isn't the alignment two on the northern side the St Helens line and two on the southern side the Manchester line? Seems unnecessary to make it more complicated than it need be.

  2. Trains have got to cross somewhere, if you have down up down up (Which I think was the arrangement years ago) they will have to cross at the new "Roby Junction". So it isn't really any more complicated. As to which way is better, I've no idea, but network rail obviously think up up down down is the preferred arrangement.

Of course historically it was four track all the way to Edge Hill.

  3. Yeah, pity about Broad Green being wrecked when the M62 was built - if it wasn't for that it could be 4 track as it used to be.

  4. They aren't remodelling it twice, they are doing the work in two stages.

    1. I suppose so, although stage two does involve removing some track laid in stage one, and reconfiguring the related signalling, so it still seems a little inefficient.

  5. How will they fit? It looks like the tracks will run straight through the BT building and bus station?...

    1. I *think* it's the BT car park rather than the building, so all they have to do is knock the wall down and take a strip of land. Anyway, the TWA application for stage two has been approved this week, so the planners think it's OK.
